For our Soup Talk on 16th April, we welcome Andy A For our Soup Talk on 16th April, we welcome Andy Abbot- artist, musician, arts organiser and newly appointed Project Director of The Farmers Arms, for his talk: ‘Doing It Together’: Reflections on Embedded Practice in Arts and Community Spaces

Andy will reflect on his creative journey to Lowick from the Highlands of Scotland and valleys of rural Derbyshire, through post-industrial towns and cities of West Yorkshire and East Lancashire, and with a few detours to warmer and drier climes in Europe, East Asia and North America.

Over the last twenty five years Andy has developed an embedded approach to celebrating and developing culture in unusual places – honing a hands-on ‘low intervention’ method that harnesses the existing, everyday creativity of the places in which he lives and works.

As a socially-engaged artist he has undertaken commissions for Tate Modern, NHS, Calderdale Borough Council, Luton Borough Council, Museum of Oxford, Pist Istanbul, and Yorkshire Forward. As a musician he has toured internationally on the Do-It-Yourself underground circuit, as well as performing at Alexander Palace and Leeds and Reading Festivals.

In this talk Andy will share some of the experiences and learning from this journey with a focus on the alternative spaces and organisations he has been involved in – including Black Dogs artist collective and The Brudenell Social Club in Leeds; The 1in12 Club and Wharf Chambers co-operatively members-run social centres; Cittadellarte ‘Centre for Art and Social Transformation’ in a former textiles mill in Northern Italy; and the 400-year old Puzzle Hall Inn Community pub and grassroots music venue in Sowerby Bridge.

The talk will also act as the first step in Andy’s action research to think together with the communities of The Farmers Arms about what approaches could be applied and developed to create a sustainable future for this reimagined pub and rural arts centre.

If you’re having soup please arrive in good time (ie. by 6pm at the latest, for a 6:30pm start) if you’d like to eat beforehand. Booking strongly encouraged via our website - we’d hate to run out of soup!

Our soup talker on Thursday 9th April is Emma Sumn Our soup talker on Thursday 9th April is Emma Sumner!

After supporting the transformation and leading the fundraising campaign that helped save The Farmer’s Arms, Emma made a significant shift, leaving rural Cumbria to move to Jaipur, India, to become Director of the Public Arts Trust of India.

She joined the organisation at a moment of rapid growth and international ambition. Over the following two years, Emma supported the expansion of its public programmes and global profile, helping to develop Jaipur Art Week, establish Jodhpur Arts Week, launch two Arts and Learning Centres in Jaipur and Jodhpur, and create a new artist residency programme in Jodhpur.

Her work focused on fostering a more holistic model of cultural development, integrating commissioning, residencies, curating, education, professional development and community exchange. At its heart was a commitment to learning-led practice and co-created commissioning models, ensuring projects reflected local culture and heritage while meaningfully engaging both local communities and international artists.

In this talk, Emma reflects on the realities of building cultural infrastructure across contexts, exploring what it means to work internationally with care and reciprocity; how public art can function as a tool for exchange rather than extraction; and what she learned from two transformative years working alongside artists and communities in India.

PRE-BOOKING STRONGLY ENCOURAGED:
Booking your ticket ahead really matters. We aren’t able to run our talks unless we know we have sold tickets, and we’d hate to run out of soup too. Tickets available on our website- Thanks!
